A Reform Congregation Serving the Twin Cities

The Transition: Frequently asked questions.

On November 28, 2007, Rabbi Stacy Offner announced her resignation from Shir Tikvah in order to become vice president of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ) in New York. She will conclude her 20 year tenure at Shir Tikvah on June 30, 2008.

Below are the frequently asked questions and answers from the congregation which will be updated periodically as the rabbinic search process and transition unfold.

What exactly will Rabbi Offner be doing as vice president of the URJ and why is that position so important?

The URJ, formerly the Union of American Hebrew Congregations, is the central body of Reform Judaism in North America, uniting 1.5 million Reform Jews in more than 900 synagogues. Rabbi Offner was offered a tremendous opportunity to join the professional leadership team consisting of a president, senior vice president and vice president. She will be the first pulpit rabbi in any of these positions and the first woman on this leadership team. This is a historic appointment indeed. As vice president, Rabbi Offner will be working with the URJ board (made up of 250 people across North America) and Reform synagogues to strengthen Reform Judaism.
