Shir Tikvah is joining with Temple Israel to provide emergency shelter to families in need from January 3-17, 2016 as part of the Families Moving Forward shelter program of Beacon Interfaith Housing Collaborative. Participating congregations host homeless families (up to 16 people) in their houses of worship for dinner and overnight. Due to construction at Temple Israel, we have offered our building to host families and in conjunction with Temple Israel volunteers, Shir Tikvah members can volunteer to contribute a portion of the dinner, eat dinner with the families, play with the children, and engage with the adults (5:30-9:00 Monday through Saturday; 4:00-9:00 Sunday) or spend the night in our building (air mattresses provided!) with our guests (8:30 p.m. to 7:30 a.m.). Volunteers will also be needed for set-up on January 3, Saturday morning breakfasts (January 9 &16), and take-down on January 17. Parents are encouraged to bring their children to participate in this mitzvah. To find out more about the volunteer opportunities available and to sign up, click here.
The Gendler Grapevine Project
In honor of the Shmita year, and as part of our ongoing commitment to environmental stewardship, the Shir Tikvah Climate Minyan has applied for and received a $10,000 Gendler Grapevine Grant to transform our grounds into a model of sustainable land use. Projects will include; replacing lawn with pollinator friendly native plantings, expanding our vegetable garden, planting fruit trees, hosting bee hives, and putting in rain gardens.
Help us create our Gan Tikvah-Garden of Hope. We invite members to participate in the mitzvah of transforming our grounds! Sign up for 1 or more two-hour shifts over the summer. This is a perfect family activity for parents and children, ages 12 and up. No prior experience required, just a willingness to sweat and get a bit dirty.
Can't work in the garden? Donate to the Tikkun Olam Working Group Fund (Social Justice) in support of the project - $10,000 more is needed to complete the plan.
