Talk, Child, Not Bride- Ending Child Marriage*
Elizabeth Heger Boyle, J.D., Ph.D, Professor of Sociology and Law at the U of M, will speak about child marriage globally, in the US, and in Minnesota.
Senator Sandy Pappas, founder and President of Forward Global Women, will speak about the organization's work.
Dr. Ellen Kennedy, founder and Executive Director of World Without Genocide, will discuss policies to reduce discrimination and violence against women globally and locally.
*Nearly 250,000 underage girls were married between 2000 and 2010. Many child marriages occur to avoid prosecution on charges of statutory rape or to protect rapists. At a global level, at least 700,000,000 women in the world today were married as children. The physical, psychological, economic, and social effects of these marriages are devastating and often result in poverty, abuse, illness, divorce.
